Does Google Pass Credits Even if You Do Not Do 301 While Moving a Website?

i-love-googleMost people would have a clear answer, “No”, if you want your link and ranking credits to be passed on to your new URLs while moving a site you must set up proper 301 redirections. So if it is that obvious, why am I writing about it ?

Because I found something strange happening.! I wrote about how I tried to move my Blogger blog to WordPress and set up 301 redirection and how Google promptly deleted my blogger blog completely, making all my efforts useless. Now this domain is hosting this content for the last 3-4 days and has almost zero backlinks, yet the blog has now started showing up in the first page in Google for the keyword SEO Consultant India. This keyword has moderate to high competition, with professional SEO companies fighting to get their foot in, yet a brand new blog start ranking. HOW? ( note: my old blog used to rank for this keyword )

The blog is also now ranking #1 for the keyword SEO Kolkata. This was also another strong hold for my earlier blog, but this blog doesn’t have any links, neither does it have SEO Kolkata anywhere in the domain name or URLs. Yet it ranks.

There is no definitive way to say that Google understood that the old SEO Kolkata blog has moved from Blogger to WordPress at digitalsrc.com/blog and is thus transferring the credits and the rankings could also be very much be result of whatever on page mentions and content it has but getting into the first page rankings for competitive keywords without any link building – makes me think Google is probably getting smarter to interpret or at least guess site moves even when there is no 301 redirections.

What are the factors that might be helping Google to understand that this is the same website as the old SEO Kolkata Blog ?

  1. The content is exactly same as the old blog (except for the new posts – 2 including this one)
  2. My Bio which was also their in the previous blog
  3. Links to my personal Social profiles – all of which earlier had links to the SEO Kolkata blog and now replaced with links to this blog

Well, whatever it is the if Google gives me back my rankings at least some of them, I am definitely not complaining 🙂
